Filter Muds

Filter muds and filter cakes are byproducts of the sugar refining process. They are rich in organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, and other nutrients and are employed as a soil amendment or fertiliser in agriculture. They are also being researched for their potential as a bioenergy source. Other possible uses for filter muds are being investigated, including the generation of biofuels, bioplastics, and other value-added products. The sugar refining industry can minimise waste and establish new revenue streams while also supporting more sustainable practises by identifying new uses for filter muds.
